What is the Victoria and Islands branch Agrologists Reading Club?

The purpose of the reading club is to delve into different topics related to the field of agrology, expose members to new issues and topics and illicit the exchange of dialogue and ideas.

The format consists of a reading followed by a one-hour meeting where the reading is discussed and dialog is free to explore the topic at hand and related ideas within the field of agrology.  Currently we will attempt this virtually, using breakout groups if needed to keep numbers manageable and encourage participation by all.  The goal is to move to smaller localized groups with face to face meetings held at local venues such as parks, coffee shops, pubs, restaurants, etc. (can you imagine…).

Introduction: In this book club session we will discuss the journal article “Environmental Escherichia coli: ecology and public health implications – a review”. Jenn Wilson, P.Ag, is part of a watershed transboundary project to improve water quality in shared Canada-US watershed. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a parameter monitored to determine the quality of surface water flowing south across the border. This journal article summarizes various studies of how E. coli is affected by various environments and if it integrates into indigenous microbial communities in natural habitats. If so, what are the implications for water quality and public health?

Discussion questions:

  1. Which one of these factors did you suspect would limit the survival of E. coli in the environment – temperature, water availability, nutrient availability, pH or solar radiation?
  2. Can E. coli interact with other micro-organisms in these natural habitats?  
  3. What are the implications to this bacterium surviving in the environment for long periods of time?
  4. Is there another way to determine contamination from human or animal feces?
  5. What are the implications to public health if long-term survival and growth of E. coli is possible?
