In this presentation, Dr. Tim Geary will be providing an overview of the Covid-19 virus itself, including a brief history of its origins, its biology, and what is known to date with respect to transmission, disease manifestation, and potential treatments and preventions (e.g. vaccines). He will also discuss what this means in terms of challenges to agricultural production systems both in the current pandemic and post-pandemic.
About Timothy Geary
Timothy Geary obtained a BSc in Biology from the University of Notre Dame in 1975 and a PhD in Pharmacology in 1980 from the University of Michigan. He then spent 5 years at Michigan State University as a Post-doctoral Fellow and Research Assistant Professor working on tropical parasitology and infectious diseases before joining The Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1985 (Animal Health – Infectious Diseases). He remained at that site until 2005 as a Senior Scientist before leaving the industrial sector to join the Institute of Parasitology at McGill University as Professor and Tier I Canada Research Chair, serving as Director of the Institute from 2007-2019, when he became Emeritus Professor. He is also a Professor (20 % appointment) in the School of Biological Sciences at Queen’s University – Belfast.
Tim has had national and international funding to support his research and has received many awards. He has published > 225 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, is on the editorial boards of 6 scientific journals and serves as a consultant for many pharmaceutical, government and non-government organizations. He is a Past-President of the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists and is a member of the Executive Committee of the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology and the Advisory Board of the National Center for Veterinary Parasitology (USA).
His research interests include the chemotherapy of infectious diseases; molecular pharmacology of antiparasitic drugs; mechanisms of antiparasitic drug resistance; molecular language of the host:parasite interface; and antiparasitic drug discovery and development.
