A Day About SOIL


Monday, Sept. 16, 9 am - 4 pm

Locations:  AM - The morning presentation will be at the Manual Training Centre, beside the Cranbrook library at 202 Kootenay St N. There will be coffee/tea and snacks. Presentation 9am to noon.

PM  Research site near Canal FlatsCarpool out to the field site. Returning to Cranbrook by 5pm. Bring food/water and dress for the weather.

Morning seminar 

9:00 am-12:00 pm -Indoor presentation by Mike Curran, MFLNRO soil scientist

Presentation includes soil characteristics, resources (Soils of Canada/BC), functions, formation, properties (structure, colour, texture, etc), sand/silt/clay, horizons, nutrients, classification.  Other topics include: Local soils and their properties affecting management, FLNRO soil disturbance management framework, (soil disturbance hazards, types and limits on disturbance, research examples on compaction, stumping, rehabilitation),  Benchland soils in the Trench and their management concerns.

Afternoon Field Tour

12:00 -4:00 pm - Field day to a Long Term Soil Productivity (LTSP) research site near Canal Flats, plus 1 or 2 other stops at sites of interest to exhibit Mike's morning discussion.  

Bring your own lunch.  Carpooling is encouraged and will be arranged after morning session.
