Tour 1 - 9:00 am – 10:30 am

Tour 2 - 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

Description of the Event:

Cermaq Canada is a vertically integrated salmon producer that operates 28 marine farms, 4 land-based fresh water hatcheries and 2 processing plants making it the second largest salmon producer in BC.  The company has similar operations in Chile and Norway and is a fully owned subsidiary of Mitsubisihi Corp.  Ocean Farms Hatchery, located in Duncan, incorporates both flow through and recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) technology.  Farmed salmon typically spend 14 months in fresh water hatcheries where eggs are fertilized, incubated, hatched and reared until they have smolted and are ready to be transferred to sea.  Once transferred to sea, fish are raised in marine net pens for an additional 18 to 24 months.  During the tour, we will learn about the various phases and technologies used by modern commercial salmon hatcheries, such as vaccination, photoperiod manipulation and RAS.

Due to space and biosecurity considerations, spaces on this tour will be limited to 16 people, to be toured through the site in 2 groups of 8 -  so sign up early!  The first group to arrive at 9:00 am and depart at 10:30am; the second to arrive at 10:30 am and depart at 12:00 pm.

There is the Old Farm Market just a short walk away where there are snacks, sandwiches, coffee, etc.
