The following recipients will be recognized at the BCIA Conference & AGM in Fort St. John on May 31, 2018. We congratuate Perry Grilz and Margaret Fenton on their achievements!

Agrologist of the Year Award:

To recognize and pay tribute to an Agrologist who has made a significant contribution to British Columbia agriculture, natural resource and environmental science.

Perry Grilz, P.Ag.

The 2017 fire season was the worst in BC history.  Perry stepped forward and played a vital leadership role for the agriculture and natural resource sectors during the event.  Perry made many contributions in areas such as:  connecting with and representing the livestock sector, providing consistent high quality leadership to FLNRO & RD staff throughout the event, proactively engaging in strategic recovery related activities both during the response and recovery phases of the event.

Perry’s ties to the agriculture industry began during his early years spent on the family farm in central Saskatchewan.  At the University of Saskatchewan Perry pursued a Bachelor of Science in Land Use Planning and a Master of Science in Plant Ecology.  After university Perry began his career in his home province in a number of positions in restoration and ecology before moving to BC where he became the Ministry of Forests Northern range Reference Areas Specialist.  In this position, Perry established a network of range enclosures throughout the northern portion of the province.  This important work continues to be a valuable resource for range staff today.  Perry was promoted to Operations Manager in the Prince George Forest District where he developed a pilot approach in response to the mountain pine beetle epidemic mitigating impacts to range tenure holders.  His work influenced the Range Program’s response to this crisis throughout the province.  Perry went on to become Associate Director of range Branch, overseeing branch operations for eight years before moving into his current role as Director of Range Branch.

Acclamations:

“Perry spent an inordinate amount of time in the Emergency Operations Centre in Prince George.  Perry was invaluable in being able to identify the solutions and the proper people that could make them happen.  Through the fire Perry was always looking forward at the long-term implications; always keeping in mind recovery and rehabilitation.” Brian McKersie, President BCCA.

“Perry has a strong commitment to the livestock industry and the stewardship of range resources.  He enthusiastically shares his knowledge and passion with both seasoned and new agrologists.  Through his hiring, mentorship and ongoing training and support Perry ensures the next generation of agrologists is equipped to meet resource and industry needs.”  Rick Manwaring, RPF and Edi Torrans, P.Ag.

Mentor of the Year Award:

To recognize and pay tribute to a member of the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists who espouses the values of being a BCIA mentor. Would be a member of the Branch hosting that year’s BCIA Conference & AGM.

Margaret Fenton, P.Ag.

“She offered to act as my mentor when I moved to Fort St. John and has been guiding me through the articling process in a considerate and professional manner. Margaret has made an effort to consider my interests as a young environmental professional and it is clear that she considers who I am as an individual before offering advice.  Her contribution to the BCIA is significant and I believe she is deserving of Mentor of the Year.”

Submitted by Phillippe Langemeyer, A.Ag.

Margaret has served multiple terms on the Peace River Branch Executive, twice as North Peace Director and once as the A.Ag. Coordinator.  Margaret has mentored numerous AAg’s over the years providing guidance to them through the articling process. As the A.Ag.
