Congratulations to our 2021 Scholarship Recipients

The BC Institute of Agrologists is pleased to announce the two recipients of the 2021 scholarships. Congratulations to Elizabeth Houghton and Madeline Stuart as the 2021 BCIA Scholarships recipients! Each scholarship recipient is awarded $1500. Thank you to the scholarship review committee for their work evaluating the applications.

Elizabeth Houghton, a BCIA student member, was awarded the BCIA graduate scholarship.

Originally from Waterloo, Ontario, Elizabeth moved to the Okanagan Valley in 2018 to complete her BSc in Earth and Environmental Science at UBC (Okanagan). In the final year of her undergraduate degree, she had the opportunity to work with Dr. Louise Nelson on a project investigating the influence of postharvest deficit irrigation on sweet cherry orchards throughout the Okanagan Valley with a focus on the implications it may have on tree growth, phenology, and cold hardiness. Her interest and excitement for this topic led to her current pursuit of completing a PhD in Biology under Dr. Nelson, where she is continuing to research cherry ecophysiology. In her free time, she enjoys hiking local trails with her dog and painting Canadian landscapes.

Madeline Stuart, a BCIA student member, was awarded the BCIA undergraduate scholarship.

Madeline was born and raised on the southern coast of British Columbia. Being exposed to the outdoors from a young age gave Madeline a passion for the environment and sustainability. Additionally, serious allergies inspired her to learn more about British Columbia's food system. These two factors led Madeline to go to the University of British Columbia. She is currently in her 4th year studying Global Resource Systems, with a specialty in Sustainable Agriculture. After completing her bachelor's degree, she hopes to get her Masters in Agroecology. Madeline's dream is to work to increase soil biodiversity on the farmscape and reduce agrochemical runoff.
