1.  Announcing new BCIA President-elect - Jane Kerner, P.Ag. 

Jane Kerner, P.Ag. will be stepping into the BCIA president-elect position at the 71st BCIA AGM in Fort St. John this year.  Jane has been a P.Ag. with BCIA since 2005 and past president of Kamloops branch.  Take a moment to read Jane Kerner's bio, now available on the BCIA website under News.

2. Call for Resolutions - Due by April 30, 2018

In accordance with Bylaw 51 it is required that all Resolutions for discussion and action at the Annual General Meetings must be received in the BCIA office by 4:00 (PST)  April 30th,2018. Resolutions should be provided in written form to the office and must identify the mover and seconder of the specific resolution. Please follow a “ Wheras”( a preamble outlining the issue) and a “ Now Therefore I move that…. ( the specific wording hat the mover wants the Members to vote upon). Supporting document or information can be attached as an Appendix but should  be specifically referred to in the proposed Resolution. All voting members of BCIA are eligible to submit resolutions.  Please submit resolutions to JP Ellson, Executive Director/Registrar at If you have any questions or would like some assistance in writing a specific Resolution please feel free to contact the BCIA office.

3. BCIA launches Facebook and Linked In 

BCIA has launched a Facebook site at   LinkedIn will be available soon.  Stay tuned.

5.  Welcome to new Committee Members

Council hs approved three new committee members.  BCIA welcomes Kirk Phair, P.Ag. as the new chair of the Professional Practice Committee, Matthew Davidson as a member of the Professional Practice Committee and Teresa Loewen, A.Ag. as a member of the Credentials Committee. 6.Call for Mentor of the Year Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for Mentor of the Year 2017.  Each year, the Mentor of the Year recipient is selected from the branch hosting the BCIA AGM.  This year we are looking for nominations of mentors from the Peace River branch. The nominee should have demonstrated commitment to the mentoring program over many years.  Do you know a member who has been a great mentor either in past years or currently?  Nominations may come from AAgs and/or PAgs.  For more information on the Mentor of the Year Award, visit the website under About BCIA - Recognition and Awards, Deadline for nominations is March 30, 2018.  Send nominations to JP Ellson at 


7. BCIA Scholarships

Council has recently approved a proposal from the Communications Committee for two $1500 scholarships to be awarded by BCIA to BC post-secondary students for 2018.  Look for more information on scholarship criteria and the application in the coming months.  

8. BCIA Strategic Planning

In 2017, each BCIA branch invited members to various sessions on "Strategic Planning - The Future of Agrology".  Members were asked for their input on moving forward to protect the public interest in the sustainable use of British Columbia’s natural resources and BCIA's role.  Some members also provided input through surveys. Thank you to all who provided their input.  In the coming months, Council and members of the Strategic Planning initiative will take "What was Said" by the membership to create BCIA's Strategic Plan.  Council will present a draft of this document at the BCIA AGM in Fort St. John, May 31, 2018.


9. Branch AGM's Update

Four branches held their AGM's in January and February of this year.  Peace River branch held a day of PD presentations before their AGM in the afternoon. Fraser Valley branch had presentations and 4H demonstations prior to their AGM which followed the Agricultural show at Tradex.  Vancouver branch had a keynote speaker followed by their AGM in the evening.and Okanagan branch had an afternoon of PD presentations followed by a dinner and their AGM.  Thank you to all those involved in organizing these events and  welcome to all the branch executive members (new and past) who volunteer to organize the branch Professional Development events, AAg workshops and branch AGM's,   We look forward to a full year of PD events.

10. BCIA Conference and AGM Update

Mark your calendar for May 30 - June 1, 2018!  Registration for the 2018 BCIA Conference and AGM in Fort St. John will open on March 15. Early bird registration ($250) will be available until April 30.  The planning committee has been busy organizing panel discussions, presentations and tours under the theme "Working Together: A Cooperation between Agrology and Industry".  Topics include panel discussions on Land Application, Re-vegetation, Integrated Water Use Management.  Full day tours are planned for around the Peace River region. Watch for the Conference brochure and description, coming soon. AAgs! The AAg workshop will be presented the evening of Friday, June 1.  The Ethics workshop is scheduled for Sat. June 2, 2018. 

11. Upcoming Branch and BCIA Activities

  • Okanagan Branch - Macrophotography Workshop - March 13 - Ward Strong will talk about taking pics of little things: how he does it (for interest’s sake), and how farmers, consultants and others might do it for diagnosis and information purposes. Go to BCIA website - Events
  • WEBINAR - An Overview of BC's new Spill Response Regulations - REPLAY - This webinar was hosted by BCIA on January 16 and presented by Ben Vander Steen to a capacity group.  Because many members missed the webinar, it will be presented again on March 29, this time by Maryam Mofidpoor, P.Ag.  This will be the same presentation as Ben presented in January. For more information, and to register, go to BCIA website - EVENTS

12. Let us Know "What YOU Do as an Agrologist"

Ever been asked "What does an Agrologist do?"  BCIA members do many things.  BCIA recognizes 38 different areas of practice for our members.  Have a look at the BCIA video on "Why Choose Agrology?"  to see what some BCIA members do.  Want to share what you do in Agrology with other Agrologists and the public?  Take a moment to complete our "What Does an Agrologist Do?" survey and be our next Featured Agrologist!
