October 2021's Featured Agrologist is Karey Dow, PAg, Vancouver (District 3)!

What are your areas of practice? What is your expertise?

My area of practice is contaminated land assessment, remediation and decommissioning. I specialize in the land development sector, supporting commercial and industrial landowners with acquisitions, divestitures, and redevelopment of brownfield sites.

Why did you choose the career in which you are currently?

I think my career chose me. Who grows up thinking they want to play with dirt for a living? Twenty years ago, I was lucky enough to land a co-op position stuffing soil sample jars on contaminated sites and I’ve never looked back!

What do you do in a typical workday or week?

A typical work week involves routinely interacting with co-workers and clients to collaboratively strategize the most cost-effective and timely way to manage brownfield investigation and remediation, and ultimately transform an under-utilized piece of property into a new, safe, and more productive space for a community. Now that four colleagues and I have just launched our own full-service environmental consulting business called Legacy Environmental Ltd., there is never a dull moment and I’m adding IT, accounting, and bookkeeping to my daily routine.

Describe a challenge encountered in your career, and how you resolved it.

One of the biggest challenges in my career has been shattering the glass ceiling that many women come up against. However, this challenge has also introduced me to a whole group of women professionals and has provided me with a strong support network.  I’m proud to have been involved in corporate Diversity and Inclusion committees and am currently a member of the Women of the Urban Development Institute (UDI) committee.

Please share some favourite bonus "perks" and/or experiences from your career.

The biggest bonus of my career is being able to train and mentor the next generation of environmental consultants. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a young agrologist achieve their goals and be successful in their career.
