On Nov. 3, 2018, Victoria and Islands branch held their AGM at the Oceanfront Suites at Cowichan Bay. After the business meeting, Bryan Vrooom, president of the Victoria & Islands branch awarded a number of new P.Ags their certificates. Receipients included: Katherine Bergn, Thierry Bodson, Lori Carter, Suzanne Durnin, Stephen Gordon, Nancy Labenck-Bronstein, Melanie Mamoser, Simon Norris, Thomas O'Dell, and Hanaa Saaed. 25 Year Award Recipients included: Barry Remus, Michael Kelly, Jill Hatfield
After lunch the Cowichan Tribes Lands and Governance Department toured members around the Lower Koksilah Watershed to showcase two flood management projects - one related to sediment removal and bank stabilization, one associated with a log jam removal. The construction phase of these projects were completed entirely by Cowichan Tribes members! Members also visited one of the FCSAP-funded contaminated sites currently in assessment phase and reviewed some of the unique challenges and solutions proposed for the project.
We would like to acknowledge the folks who took time out of their schedules to host and provide a presentation. They were:
- Melissa Tokarek, Associate Manager of Lands and Governance
- Tim Kulchyski, Cowichan Tribes Fisheries Biologist
- Lemo Smith, Community Liaison Coordinator and Construction Supervisor
Both Tim and Lemo are Cowichan Tribes members.
They did a great job. In addition to describing the reclamation work, including some of the challenges they faced, they also gave a nice overview of the Cowichan Tribes from a historic geographic range, membership (single largest First Nation in BC) and land title perspective. Thank you.
