1. BCIA Strategic Plan

BCIA is pleased to announce the release of the Institute's new Strategic Plan.  Thank you to all of the agrologists who participated and provided their input and to those who coordinated the Strategic Engagement sessions in each branch.  Your voices have helped to shape the direction of BCIA's future. 
The Strategic Plan is presented in two formats. The visual format is a two-sided single page document summarizing BCIA's key values and directions. See HERE. The complete Strategic Plan document includes more detail on BCIA's strategic context under the authority of the Agrologists Act.  See HERE.  You can find the Strategic Plan posted with the Agrologists Act and Bylaws on the website.

2. BCIA Scholarship Application

Agrologists!  Do you know a student attending a BC post-secondary agrology-related program? To support future agrologists in achieving their career in agrology, the BC Institute of Agrologists will award up to two $1500 scholarships annually.  These scholarships are available to 3rd or 4th year undergraduate students and graduate students attending a recognized BC post-secondary institute.  Applications are now available. 3. Agrologist of the Year and Mentor of the Year Awards

At the AGM in Fort St. John, Perry Grilz, P.Ag. of Cariboo Central Interior branch was recognized with the Agrologist of the Year award.  Perry played a vital leadership role for the agriculture and natural resource sectors during the 2017 fires.  Read more about Perry on the website under NEWS     Margaret Fenton, P.Ag. of Peace River branch was recognized with the Mentor of the Year award.  Read more about Margaret.


4.  AGM Report and AGM Update

The 2018 issue of the AGM Report was released on May 31 and is posted online under News and Member Resources.  The Report contains the AGM Agenda, President's Report, Executive Director's Report, Depurty Registrar's Report, 2017 Audited Financial Report, Committee Reports and Branch Reports as well as an update on the past year's new A.Ag.'s and P.Ag.'s and resolutions presented at the AGM in Fort St. John.  Print copies were available at the BCIA Conference and AGM.  If you would like a copy mailed to you please log into your member profile and indicate this under the EDIT tab by June 13.  

The four Resolutions outlined in the AGM Report and listed on the website since May 1st, 2018 were presented and approved at the BCIA AGM on May 31st, 2018.  The motion for Resolution #4 regarding the increase in professional dues was amended to "Be it Resolved that the motion of BCIA Council dated Nov. 24, 2017 respecting an increase in the annual dues of $75 for all P.Ag and A.Ag members of BCIA is ratified."  This motion passed by a vote of 120 to 4. A Q & A document summarizing the questions presented at the AGM and draft AGM minutes will be posted under Member Resources by July 2018.

5.  Conference and AGM Survey

Over 125 people attended the full Conference and AGM held on the Thursday and Friday, with another 40 people attending  one day of the conference.  We would like to hear back from all of those attendees on what you thought about the conference events.  For all conference and AGM attendees, please take a moment to complete the conference survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GQF2JYW

BCIA would like to thank the various organizations and businesses who sponsored the Conference and AGM held in Fort St. John.  You can view a listing of this year's sponsors in the Conference program posted on the BCIA website under News - Newsletters.   Special thanks goes to the Lido Theatre for their "surprise" donation of a complimentary 7 night resort accomodations for two in Mexico, and for arranging the "Tom Petty Tribute" entertainment. Those who attended the Pig Roast at the Lido Theatre in Fort St. John had a great time spinning the wheel for their chance to win the Mexican getaway while rocking to Tom Petty.  Congratulations to Bridget for winning the Mexico tickets! And finally thank you to all the Peace River branch members who worked so hard to plan and organize the conference. Kudos!

7. Conference PD Sessions PowerPoints

Over 125 BCIA professionals attended the various PD sessions held in Fort St. John on Thursday, May 31.  PowerPoints from the presentations and panel discussions have been posted to the Members Resources section under Professional Development.  Take a moment to have a look at these.

8. Call for PD Auditors

Each year, BCIA audits the professional development hours of 40 randomly selected P.Ags and A.Ags.  In the coming weeks, PD audit notices will be going out to those who have been selected for this year's PD audit.  We are currently looking for volunteers to be part of the PD audit committee. Committee members should preferably be P.Ags who have previously been audited.  If interested please contact Laurena at laurena@bcia.com by June 12.

9. Request for BC Land Summit PD Suggestions

Next year BCIA's AGM will be held in conjunction with the BC Land Summit conference in Vancouver from May 8 - 10, 2019.  We are looking for suggestions for next year's Land Summit Professional Development sessions.  If you have suggestions on topics or presenters you might be interested in seeing, please send your suggestions to admin@bcia.com by June 15th.

10. Agrologists of Canada Call for Volunteers

Agrologists of Canada/Agronomes Canada are conducting a pilot project to demonstrate the value of Professional Agrologist advice or services. P.Ag. volunteers are needed to participate in this project. For more information, go to the BCIA website under Employment - Volunteer Opportunities  Indicate your interest by June 15th to laurena@bcia.com

12. What Do You Do as an Agrologist?" SURVEY 

BCIA members do many things.  BCIA recognizes 38 different areas of practice in which our members work within.  Have a look at the BCIA video on "Why Choose Agrology?"  to see what some BCIA members do.  Share what you do in Agrology with other Agrologists and the public.  Take a moment to complete our "What Does an Agrologist Do?" survey and be our next Featured Agrologist!

13. May-June Website Additions

New feature to the Member Profile - PD Reports - We have added a new feature for members.  You can now view a total of your PD hours over the past 3 or more years.  Members are required to report a minimum of 30 PD hours per year, and 125 PD hours over a 3 year reporting period ending with the current reporting year.  Take a moment to review your total PD hours over the past 3 years.
