March Featured Agrologist - Ben Kerr

What are your areas of practice? What is your expertise?

Water Resource Management, Business Management, Technology.

My main expertise is in translating scientific analyses into web-based decision support tools for resource management.

Why did you choose the career you are currently in?

It chose me! I ended up studying geography after spending my first year of university in engineering, second in earth science, and third in computer science/business. After taking an elective in geography, it became clear that the holistic approach to looking at natural systems was a great fit for me, and that there were ways I could use my technical skillset to make a positive impact in natural resource management. After working closely with engineers and geologists for several years, I learned that what I was doing actually fit under the umbrella of agrology.

Why did you become a member of BCIA?

For the learning opportunities, and to support the long history of agrology in the province. I also appreciate the accreditation and am proud to have P.Ag. at the end of my name as it gives weight to the work that I do.

What do you do in a typical work day or week?

Much of my time now is spent on business management related tasks - project management and supervision of staff, client relationship management and business development. I still spend a substantial amount of my time doing technical work, in terms of project design and research and development. My days are typically spent in the office, with perhaps a half dozen presentations a year where I share our work and learnings.

Share some interesting "perks" and experience of your job.

Earlier in my career, the fieldwork opportunities were outstanding - helicopters, ATVs, snowmobiles, mobile drill rigs, etc. I was able to see and spend time in places that I would never have been before. Highlights now would include the thrill of being presented with challenging problems from our client, and the reward of delivering results that make meaningful impact to our clients environmental, social and economic performance.
