What’s the Deal will Food Security, Food Sovereignty, and the Food System?
We’ve all seen the increase in food prices, experienced the loss of this years' local soft fruit crop, and heard more than one CBC report on food security. This presentation will expand your understanding of the issues through the lens of an action-based Cranbrook non-profit, Community Connections Society of SE BC.
This presentation will start by identifying the current challenges to food security and the ways in which our food system is flawed. The impact these challenges are having on individual and community food security will be discussed. Lastly, and perhaps most encouraging, the actions that Community Connections Society is taking to combat food insecurity in Cranbrook will be presented. This includes projects such as the Public Produce Garden, Cranbrook Food Recovery, Community Meals, Cranbrook Urban Farm and more. The presentation will conclude with time allocated for questions and discussion.
Sophie Larsen works with the Community Connections Society of Southeast BC and is an instructor at the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook. Sophie’s professional interests lie in the intersection of environmental science and food systems. Sophie works on food security projects, both locally and regionally. Through her position with the Community Connections Society, and in partnership with many community organizations, Sophie has helped develop an open gate garden, built a commercial kitchen, held summits and training and food literacy events, and developed a food recovery program.
