Join VIB Branch for an in-person tour of the Cowichan Lake Research Station, where you’ll gain firsthand insight into forest genetics and tree breeding programs shaping the future of climate-resilient forests in British Columbia.
This guided experience will introduce participants to the history and work of the research station, followed by a field tour of key operational areas including the nursery, transplant beds, and Douglas-fir interracial crosses plantation. The afternoon will continue with a deeper look into breeding and research plantations, highlighting how genetic selection supports long-term forest sustainability.

Presenters
Jon Degner, Ph.D., P.Ag. Research Team Lead, Forest Genetics Section, Ministry of Forests
Jon leads the coastal Douglas-fir and Sitka spruce breeding and testing programs and oversees research across coastal genetics programs. He also currently leads breeding initiatives for western redcedar and yellow cypress.
Hayley Tumas, Ph.D., P.Ag. Research Scientist, Genetic Conservation, Ministry of Forests
Hayley’s work focuses on genetic conservation across several species including hemlock, true firs, whitebark pine, and Garry oak.
