Title: Harnessing the tools of chemical analysis to predict, prevent and mitigate the impact of forest fire smoke on grapevines and wine.
Description: With increasingly frequent and severe forest fires, the exposure of wine grapes to smoke is a persistent challenge for BC's grape/wine producers. Smoke exposed grapes may (sometimes, not always) yield smoky wines but problematically, the smokiness only becomes perceptible by smell months after grape harvest and fermentation. By pairing chemical analyses with in-vineyard and in-greenhouse studies, researchers in Dr. Zandberg's lab at UBC's Okanagan Campus have been researching how forest fire smoke impacts grapes and wine quality. This talk will present the current state of our research as well as providing some prevention and mitigation ideas that are currently being pursued in collaboration with local wineries.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Zandberg is an associate professor of chemistry at The University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus. Dr. Zandbergs research group focus their efforts on the analytical chemistry of all things carbohydrate. The Zandberg team also studies how forest fire smoke may influence grape and wine aroma; key to this story are.....carbohydrates. In 2022, Dr. Zandberg's research (as part of a team of 11) was recognized by the Canadian Ministry of Agriculture with a "Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Science".
