Field Trip Add-On:
Enhance your conference experience with an unforgettable excursion that celebrates conservation and sustainability! The field trip will take place in the afternoon of Day 1 and Day 2 (starting at 2:40 PM)
-
Johns Family Nature Conservancy Regional Park: Discover the breathtaking beauty and ecological significance of Johns Family Nature Conservancy Regional Park on a guided field trip! Spanning over 400 hectares in South Kelowna, this extraordinary park was created through a historic 323-hectare land donation by Alfred and Nancy Johns, making it BC’s largest private land conservancy. It protects rare ecosystems, including grasslands, wetlands, rock bluffs, and forests, essential for preserving biodiversity.
Learn about groundbreaking conservation efforts, such as reintroducing native Western Redcedar and using Chrysolina beetles to control invasive St. John’s-wort. Explore how the park has rebounded from the 2003 wildfire, which ignited a natural regeneration of the landscape, and understand the ecological value of fire recovery. Designated Canada’s third Nocturnal Preserve, the park also showcases the importance of protecting dark skies for wildlife and cultural heritage.
With trails offering panoramic views and expert-led discussions on sustainability, this stop is a unique opportunity to connect with nature.
-
Summerhill Pyramid Winery: Conference attendees will also indulge in an exclusive tasting and guided tour at Summerhill Pyramind Winery, a global organic and biodynamic winemaking leader.
Discover how biodynamic principles—an approach to farming that views the vineyard as a self-sustaining ecosystem—are seamlessly integrated into Summerhill's practices to enhance soil health, foster biodiversity, and cultivate wines of exceptional quality. The experience includes a tasting of their biodynamic estate wines, each reflecting the unique terroir and their commitment to sustainable viticulture.
During the tour, explore their vineyards and learn about their holistic approach to farming, prioritizing ecological balance and the protection of native species. This is a rare opportunity to witness firsthand how biodynamic agriculture and winemaking work harmoniously with nature.
This field trip is optional during registration. Spaces are limited—don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty, innovation, and sustainability of the Okanagan region! Please note: alternate networking opportunities will be available for attendees not participating in the field trip.
Invasive Species Research Roadmap Workshop Add-On:
Join us for an engaging and collaborative workshop designed to build on the momentum of the 2020 Road Map for Invasive Species Research in BC. This session will be held on Day 3 of the conference (starting at 10:45 AM) and it will feature a dynamic panel discussion with leading experts, followed by interactive break-out group activities to identify and prioritize BC's invasive species research needs.
To help guide meaningful discussions during the workshop, a pre-workshop survey will be sent to conference attendees. Your input is crucial in shaping the future of research priorities, tools, and strategies to combat invasive species and mitigate their environmental, economic, cultural, and social impacts.
This workshop is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the ongoing evolution of the Road Map and foster collaboration within the invasive species research and practitioner community. Let’s work together to set the direction for invasive species research in BC!
