Open to: All BCIA Registrants and their Guests

Join the Victoria and Islands Branch for an afternoon walking tour through the Heritage Forest in Qualicum Beach. Led by Tom Whitfield, President of the Brown Property Preservation Society, this guided tour will explore the forest’s history and ecology, the role of First Nations in its preservation, and the protections that help conserve this unique property.

Participants will have the opportunity to identify native flora, explore the Moist Maritime Coastal Douglas-fir biogeoclimatic zone, and learn more about the legal protection and long-term stewardship of the Heritage Forest.

The group will meet at the Heritage Forest entrance on Crescent Road. Free street parking is available across the street from the golf course.

Please wear sturdy footwear and dress appropriately for the weather.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the tour, participants will have an opportunity to:

  • Recognize native flora found within the Heritage Forest.
  • Explore the characteristics of the Moist Maritime Coastal Douglas-fir biogeoclimatic zone.
  • Learn about the history and ecology of the property.
  • Better understand First Nations influence on the preservation of the Heritage Forest.
  • Understand the legal protections that support the conservation of the land.

About the Presenter

Tom Whitfield, President, Brown Property Preservation Society

Tom Whitfield is a retired Registered Professional Forester with a 30-year career spanning British Columbia and Ontario. His professional experience includes silviculture, forest inventory, forest ecology, wetland research, and extensive consulting with First Nations. Tom has served as President of the Brown Property Preservation Society since 2008.

ATTENTION articling registrants!! The in-person event will be an excellent opportunity to network and meet with other branch registrants.
