Presenter: Brian Wallace, PhD, PAg
Presenter Bio: Brian is a research soil scientist with the BC Ministry of Forests working in Kamloops since 2007. Brian is a graduate of UBC with a BSc in Agroecology (2005) and an MSc in Soil Science (2007). During a break from the ministry (2011 - 2015), Brian completed a PhD in Soil Science at the University of Saskatchewan. Current research work has been focused on the effects of forest and rangeland management on productivity and carbon storage and how these processes interact with varied soil properties and year to year fluctuations in water availability in in the Thompson-Okanagan Region. Soil identification and classification is an underlying theme through most of his work and he has had the opportunity to work with students and other professionals on these skills throughout BC during the annual Soil Identification Course offered through the Pacific Regional Society of Soil Science (PRSSS.ca). The extremes in climate from the valley bottom to higher elevations in Kamloops have had a profound influence on soil development and ecosystem productivity, which presents an excellent opportunity to discuss and practice soil identification and classification.
