Richard grew up on a small commercial orchard in the Okanagan Valley where his fascination with pruning and grafting fruit trees began. He attended UBC receiving a degree in Plant Science in the 1970's. After university he traveled and worked on several orchards and nurseries in Australia. back in BC he worked as an advisor to the commercial tree fruit industry in Kelowna and in 1979 joined the BC Ministry of Agriculture as a horticultural advisors. He spent a few years as each of the Kooteany District Horticulturalist, Provincial Christmas tree Specialist, Provincial Agroforestry Specialist, Provincial BioProducts Specialist and Manager of Agricultural Innovation. In early 2008 he was appointed Director of Life Sciences at the British Columbia Innovation Council. After retiring at the end of 2010 he started a new small business, Fruit Tree Horticulture, focused on training gardeners, small land owners and institutions in the Lower Mainland how to be successful with fruit trees. In 2016 he started Fruit Tree Magic, a consulting business focused on espalier training of fruit trees. He was recently appointed the UBC Botanical Garden Pomologist in Residence to rebuild their espalier fruit tree and fruit plant collections and he is also the Fruit Tree, Pruning and Plant Health Consultant to Art's Nursery in North Surrey BC.
