2:30-3:30 Nadia Mori MSc, PAg and co-ordinator for the Peace Region Living Lab. The Peace Region Living Lab (PRLL) is part of a federal initiative and network of living labs across Canada, which uses a producer-centered approach to agricultural innovation. The program brings together farmers and ranchers with scientists and commodity groups to co-develop and test innovative practices and technologies focused on mitigating and adapting to climate change by sequestering carbon and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Other environmental co-benefits include protecting soil and water quality and maximizing biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. Funding for this project has been provided in part by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) through the Agricultural Climate Solutions – Living Labs program.
3:30-4:15 Adrian Renneberg, PAg - Soils 101. Adrian received a master's degree in soil science, specializing in soil chemistry, from the University of Alberta in 2000. His studies at the U of A focused on the chemistry of mercury in soil and the remediation of mercury and hydrocarbon co-contaminated soil. While at the U of A, Adrian also worked on a project that focused on the microbiology and chemistry of mature and composite fine tailings from the tar sands in northeastern Alberta. Since graduating from the university, Adrian has been employed as an environmental consultant. The projects he has worked on include Phase I, II, and III Environmental Site Assessments on oilfield projects (well sites, battery sites, plant sites, pipelines) and commercial/industrial sites (highway maintenance yards, salt storage yards, commercial properties). Adrian has completed and implemented remediation plans for sites contaminated with hydrocarbons, salts, and metals. He also has experience in all aspects of reclamation, including pre-disturbance assessments, reclamation planning, supervising reclamation, post-disturbance soil and vegetation assessments, and reclamation certificate applications on well sites and borrow sites. Adrian also helped complete an Environmental Impact Assessment on a proposed expansion of a coal fired generating station, environmental audits on a multi-year bridge construction project, soil surveys for proposed gravel pits and a limestone quarry, and topsoil surveys for highway construction projects. Adrian has also assisted with soil and vegetation assessments for several proposed natural gas pipelines near the city of Edmonton. More recently, Adrian has supervised large construction projects, including the construction of two 200, 000 T Class II landfill in northern Alberta and the excavation of several flare pits and approximately 10,000 T of sulphur contaminated soil.
